Price on an erhu follows the wood and how carefully that wood was selected. Rosewood is warm and forgiving under the bow, which is why it suits a first instrument; ebony, black suanzhi and red sandalwood are denser and speak brighter and more directly; aged old rosewood is a different road, where wood that has sat for years gives a looser tone that still holds together.
