Of Manchu descent, accomplished in qin, xiao, poetry, calligraphy, painting, improvised performance, and improvised chanting.
From 1957 he studied the guqin under Mr. Zha Fuxi, and studied Chinese painting under Mr. Pu Xuezhai and Ms. Pan Su. In 1958 he was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music, where he studied the guqin under Mr. Wu Jinglüe. He graduated in 1963 and has taught there ever since. During this time he spent a year as a visiting scholar at Cambridge University and taught the guqin and the dongxiao for four years at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
He is currently a professor at the Central Conservatory of Music, honorary president of the Guqin Professional Committee of the Chinese National Orchestral Society (the China Qin Association), honorary president of the International Guqin Society, dean of the Fuxi Qin Academy, chairman of the China Arts Fuxi Guqin Culture Center, honorary director of the China International Culture Exchange Center, and a research fellow of the China National Painting and Calligraphy Research Institute.
