The author, Lin Guzhen, was already moved by questions of life and death at the age of six. As a high-school freshman, he came upon the lines in a book, "Where there is rising there must be falling; where there is birth there must be death; if you wish to be free of death, better not to be born," and, having an awakening, he took up the study of Chan (Zen).
Over forty years, in music he has always contemplated the Way and the art as one body; in his spiritual practice, "having moved in and out of Chan, the doctrinal schools, and the esoteric tradition for thirty years, it was only after I had passed the age of no-doubt that I realized I am an incurable child of Chan," and so he has offered much commentary on the uncommon teachings of the Chan school. He often spurs students on with the saying "Chan is a matter at the blade's edge," and his work serves precisely as a remedy for the modern malady of "using Chan to decorate one's life."
