Author: Jiang Fengzhi
A master erhu player of his generation. Born in Yixing, Jiangsu in 1908; died in 1986. He loved music from childhood, mastering the dizi by the age of ten, and at twelve became captivated by the erhu. From the age of fifteen he studied under Chu Shizhu, and his erhu playing improved rapidly. In 1929 he entered the Music Department of the Art Institute of Peking University, studying erhu and violin under Liu Tianhua. Through long years of performance practice, Jiang Fengzhi preserved the fundamental style established by Liu Tianhua, but as an outstanding artist he never rested on his laurels. Jiang held that "in learning, one must first study earnestly, and second study creatively—do not study like a mere craftsman." His representative work, "Autumn Moon over the Han Palace," is a masterpiece born of this creative approach, and it laid the foundation for the "Jiang School of Erhu."
