Born in June 1956 in the ancient capital of Xi'an. He took up the flute in September, teaching himself without an instructor. He later studied under Mr. Ai Shi, dizi performer of the Shaanxi Provincial Song and Dance Theatre; Professor Yuan Xiuhe of the Xi'an Conservatory of Music; and Mr. Tan Weiyu and Mr. Lu Chunling of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In 1977 he was admitted to the Xi'an Conservatory of Music, during which time he undertook two years of advanced study at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. After graduating in 1982 he was assigned to the Shaanxi Provincial Broadcasting Folk Orchestra; in 1985 he transferred to the Shaanxi Provincial Song and Dance Theatre. During this period, from 2000 to 2010, he served as an adjunct dizi instructor at the Xi'an Conservatory of Music, and in 2008 he transferred to the School of Music at Xi'an University.
